Q. Will my eyes look narrow if I have medial epicanthoplasty?
Medial epicanthoplasty is a surgery to control epicanthus (Mongolian fold), which is located on the inner corner of the eyes. People often think the operation only elongates the length of the eyes, but it should be considered in the matter of the shape rather than the length. When epicanthus blocks the front corner of the eyes, the eyes look stuffy. When double fold surgery is done without correcting the epicanthus, the inner starting point of the eyelid is almost invisible, thereby making unsatisfying results. In this case, if double fold surgery is done without epicanthoplasty, the eyelid line becomes too high and looks unnatural. Therefore, epicanthoplasty is often done in conjunction with double fold surgery for optimal results of natural and beautiful eyes.
Q. What is the difference between double fold surgery and ptosis surgery?
Double fold surgery is a surgery that makes a double eyelid. Those with a monolid will see their eyes bigger because skin that previously covered the eyes will be folded and removed (in case of the pseudoptosis correction). Ptosis surgery is a surgery that corrects the actual size and the shape of the eyes. If only double fold surgery is done, it could make the eyes look more prominent in general, but it often makes the actual size of the eye openings smaller. Therefore, light ptosis surgery is often combined with double eye fold surgery. Both operations can be incisional or non-incisional depending on the necessities.
Q. I want to have incisional double fold surgery, but I am worried about sausage-looking double eyelids(double lid fullness).
If the skin under the eyelid line becomes too thick, it is called the sausage-eye. We only recommend an incisional method when it’s necessary. It is a false understanding that sausage-eye is formed only by the incisional double fold surgery; it could be a side effect of non-incisional surgery as well. Sausage-eye does not occur if the experienced surgeon designs the line before the surgery and correctly performs it according to the plan.
Q. Can non-incisional double fold surgery be done to saggy skin?
If you have saggy skin (due to eye glue or tape to artificially make a double fold, aging, etc.), it might be more effective to remove saggy skin first through the incisional method. Experienced plastic surgeons try to makes scars almost invisible. However, patients could consider non-incisional double fold surgery depending on their situation, such as recovery time or how he or she wishes to look. NOTE recommends that you choose the right method through sufficient consultation.
Q. Don’t double eyelids easily be released after non-incisional double fold surgery?
One of the stereotypes of eye surgery is that it is one of the most uncomplicated operations, but actually, it is one of the most challenging ones. Non-incisional double fold surgery is performed by connecting skin and oculi muscle to make a natural-looking double fold. It is safe and leaves no scars. However, you have to be aware that your eyes are the organs that function numerous times a day, which can release even natural double fold eyelids. The recent trend, even with the incisional surgery, is to make the most natural-looking eyes; in order to do so, sutures should not be closed too tightly. However, at the same time, if the fixation is weak, even the incisional double fold can be released. Technically speaking, the probability of released double fold of non-incisional and incisional procedures is similar. It depends on the experienced surgeon’s techniques; he connects 5-6 points, finely adjusts the tension of the thread, and correctly ties the knots. At NOTE, you can have beautiful, less-releasing double fold eyelids.
